Below is our regular end of month count of articles appearing on the Middle East page of the BBC News website according to the twenty-two countries and territories defined by the BBC as making up that region per the profiles on that page.
As in previous months (see ‘related articles’ below), the count relates to three categories of articles – headline, non-headline and features – with the total representing both the appearance of a report and its level of exposure in terms of the number of days it stayed up on the site.
For the third consecutive month Syria received most coverage on the BBC News website’s Middle East page, followed by Egypt and then Israel. This month Iran was fourth in terms of coverage (largely due to the visit by the EU’s Catherine Ashton) and Libya fifth.
If readers are perhaps wondering which Israel-related subjects got the most exposure throughout March, the article which appeared on the BBC News website for the longest period of time – nine consecutive days in the ‘Features & Analysis’ section – was one titled “Plight of Jewish ‘chained women’ trapped in broken marriage“. Close behind with eight days of exposure and in the same section was Jonathan Marcus’ article on Iranian weapons smuggling. In the news section the two articles which received the most exposure (seven consecutive days) were “World’s oldest masks go on display in Jerusalem” and an article about the Equal Service law passed in the Knesset this month.
