Indy ignores deadly Palestinian terror, but rushes to pronounce settlers guilty in lethal rock-attack

Cross posted from UK Media Watch

We recently noted that the Indy was one of three British media outlets which failed to cover the two recent Palestinian terror attacks that claimed the lives of three Israelis – Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, Ziv Hajbi, and Ari Fuld – but did find time to report on other Israel related stories.

By contrast, the Indy on Saturday night was quick to publish a story about a rock-throwing attack in the West Bank that claimed the life of a Palestinian woman – an attack, relatives claim, was carried out by settlers.  However, not only did the Indy jump on the story, but immediately pronounced the settlers guilty, despite the fact that the incident is still under investigation and there aren’t any suspects.

Here’s our tweet to the Indy journalist, Samuel Osborne.

Here’s the opening sentence of the Oct. 14th article:

Palestinian woman has been killed after being struck in the head by a stone thrown by Israeli settlers.

However, as other media outlets made clear, claims are based on testimony by the victim’s relatives who  didn’t actually see the perpetrators.

Note Reuters’ far more careful and accurate headline on the incident:

Here’s Reuters’ equally cautious opening sentence:

Israeli police said on Saturday they were investigating the death of a Palestinian woman in the occupied West Bank, after her husband said he suspected Israeli settlers had pelted their car with rocks.

Though the Shin Bet has opened an investigation into the incident, and the accusations may ultimately turn out to be true, to report that the settlers are guilty as if it’s an established fact is inconsistent with the accuracy clause of the Editors’ Code, which requires that media outlets “distinguish clearly between…conjecture and fact”.

We’ve filed a complaint with Indy editors.

  1. It’s unlikely that it was a settler although possible. The settlers are religious and the rock was thrown on a Friday eve.

  2. The BBC World Service is the root cause of the anti-Israel so-called “reporting. Israel should withdraw all their Jerusalem journalists’s licences and insist upon fair reporting from any replacements.

  3. Here is a quote from the Times of Israel which matches your complaint against the Indy. I look forward to the results of your complaint to this and many similar claims made in Israeli media

A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces Monday during an attempt to stab a soldier at the Gitai Junction in the northern West Bank, the army said.

No Israeli troops were injured in the incident and the Israel Defense Forces said it has opened an investigation.

  4. This claim is similarly unsubstantiated. Will yiu be complaining to the Times of Israel?

    • You are attempting to draw an equivalence between chalk and cheese. The point being made (which you know very well) is that the media has not and often does not cover the deaths of innocent Israeli civilians, minding their own business, going about their daily lives within Israel, when murdered by a Palestinian, bringing the usual response by Palestinians across the globe to sing for joy in the streets and hand out cakes and sweets to passers by the same as took place at 9/11. On the other hand the Indie has has reported the attack made on armed soldiers by a Palestinian who was eliminated in the process and who failed to harm any soldiers in that attack. The Israeli response was not singing in the streets and handing out sweets to passers by instead an investigation was launched by the IDF into the circumstances of such an event. It is obviously easy for you to forget that these young Palestinians whave been indoctrinated from birth by UNWRA to become shahid (martyrs) and even more indoctrinated by the knowledge that even if killed in the process of an attack their family will get an annual stipend from the Palestinian Authority paid from charitable donation by the UK and EU. No media organisation will go against the ruling of Islam that there will be no glorification of an act that brings shame to the face of Islam and cowardly attacks by Palestinians (who are still not caught) on innocent civilians are just that very category of attack that does bring shame upon Islam and Muslims everywhere so are not reported in the media
