BBC promotes false equivalence between Israel and Hamas

On February 17th a report headlined “Israeli soldiers duped by Hamas ‘fake women’ phone ruse” was published on the BBC News website’s ‘Middle East’ page.

While the story itself is told reasonably, the BBC’s wider framing is worthy of note – mostly because of the information it fails to provide.

The report’s opening line describes Hamas as a “militant group” rather than a widely designated terrorist organisation backed by Iran.

“Dozens of Israeli soldiers have had their smartphones hacked by the Hamas militant group posing as women seeking attention, Israel’s military says.”

In the fourth line readers are told that:

“Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Israel view each other as mortal enemies.”

That simplistic Austin Powers-style portrayal obviously does not inform BBC audiences that Hamas violently seized control of the Gaza Strip two years after Israel had completely disengaged from the territory. Neither does it clarify that both before and since that Hamas coup, Israeli civilians have been the target of tens of thousands of violent attacks perpetrated by that terrorist group.

That of course means that readers lack relevant context concerning the background to what the BBC describes as “a permanent state of conflict” when they reach the last line of the report.

“Israel and Hamas are in a permanent state of conflict and both are engaged in intelligence gathering against one another as part of their ongoing hostilities.”

And on that note of false equivalence between the military intelligence of a sovereign country responsible for the defence of its civilians against terrorism and a scam by a terrorist organisation that seeks the destruction of Israel, the BBC’s simplistic ‘reporting’ ends.

  1. Oh dear,

do Israel ans Hams view each other as mortal enemies.
    Of course they do.
Are they in a state of permanent conflict. of course they are.

how many commentators here say that. most!

    That isn’t false equivalence.

    • Stupid comment. This is the false equivalence: “And on that note of false equivalence between the military intelligence of a sovereign country responsible for the defence of its civilians against terrorism and a scam by a terrorist organisation that seeks the destruction of Israel, the BBC’s simplistic ‘reporting’ ends.”

      Try reading it again.

Hamas’ own charter calls for the destruction of Israel. Israel’s Declaration of Independence calls for relations with Arab neighbors.

      • Hamas cannot destroy Israel indeed no country can.
It is a lie perpetrated on this blog for propaganda purposes and only the stupid would believe it.

The reason you and writer do no like it is because you and those of Hamas have similarities.
you both hate a certain people.
you both wish for those peoples not to be there.
        Sorry neither is going away.

        Lastly you are both semites.

        • I did not say that Hamas can destroy Israel. I stated that its Hamas’ goal. Maybe you should learn to read.

Show where I have ever expressed hatred a certain people.

          • It may be that you are oblivious to reality, but in implementing that goal they conduct terrorist attacks in which people actually die.

You haven’t shown any proof that I harbor any hatred for a certain people, so you should apologize for your smear.

          • look up anything you say about Palestinians here. you know the way it goes they are all out to kill Jews.

Terrorist attacks can destroy Israel. Hmm.

            Take more blue pills.

some people forget most of those murdered in the demonstrations.
Why were these justified. They were members of an organisation.

            That is very Hamas.

          • The terrorists who carry out attacks against Jews under the auspices of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, etc. are Palestinian. Are you denying that they are?

And you are also misquoting me. I did not say that terrorist attacks can destroy Israel. I have said that in implementing their goal of destroying Israel, people die. Are denying that?

You also conveniently overlook the documented fact that many of the demonstrators were firing on the troops while trying to break through the barrier? So are you also saying that Jews don’t have the right to defend themselves?

          • Palestinian terrorists are rank armatures compared to Jewish terrorists of the past. Indeed they probably have not murdered as many innocent people.

I have yet to see any Jews flee in terror of being murdered and then have their property stolen.

you cannot implement a goal if it cannot be attained.

Funny how this writer and Jewish newspapers and the government omitted that information.

          • 1,358 Israelis have died just since the year 2000 due to Palestinian terrorism. https://mfa.gov.il/MFA/ForeignPolicy/Terrorism/Victims/Pages/In%20Memory%20of%20the%20Victims%20of%20Palestinian%20Violence%20a.aspx>

You have to see any Jews fleeing in terror? Rocket attack victims have 15 seconds to reach a shelter. Property stolen? There have been cases of Israelis leaving their homes, just to find Arab squatters who had taken over in their absence. I personally a lady in Jaffa who had that experience.

And you obviously don’t understand English. I never said that Hamas’ goal of destroying Israel is attainable; nevertheless, they try to kill as many as possible. Trying to hide that information is propaganda.

You still haven’t shown where I harbor any hatred towards a certain people. Apologizing would be the right thing to do. Maybe you should research that as well.

          • so you do not understand statistics either. c comparing people killed over 20 years to people killed in one year is comparing apples with oranges.

          • how many Palestinians were killed in one year. 1948?

The only way to compare is to annualise those victims. You certainly cannot compare it over a 20 odd year period.

            That is stats 101

          • Exactly the same apples and oranges being compared by the BBC which was the source reason for this particular blog entry. You cannot have it both ways, in any case you are comparing members of Hamas rioting throwing IEDs, shooting, sending fire kites, balloon bombs and arson with, innocent Israeli civilians going about their daily lives, there can be no equivalence. Just in case you don’t know where to look https://mfa.gov.il/MFA/ForeignPolicy/Terrorism/Palestinian/Pages/Wave-of-terror-October-2015.aspx

          • This is what you have stated:
The reason you and writer do no like it is because you and those of Hamas have similarities.
YOU BOTH HATE A CERTAIN PEOPLE (emphasis mine)
you both wish for those peoples not to be there.
            Sorry neither is going away.

            Prove it.

          • go back and look at what you and other people say..
It is on this very article. Prescribe characteristics to a certain people. how ironic what has holistically occurred to Jews . People were wrong to do it. People are equally wrong in doing this to Palestinians. Christians must be aghast at this.

          • What characteristics have I prescribed to Palestinians in general? You still accuse me of harboring hatred and have no proof and yet refuse to apologize. You have shown a complete lack of class in this matter.

  2. The simple minds at the BBC are unable to grasp the complexity of the situation on the ground and refuse to accept that both Hamas and the PA are unelected dictatorships who carry out daily terrorist operations, any who manage to martyr themselves in the act of killing Jews ensure the PA pays their family a lifetime pension. Even a simpleton can see that such a business model is unsustainable in the long term. Sit down and negotiate for a better life instead of trying to kill Jews.

    • This is not a result of being “simple minded” I could forgive that! This is plain unadulterated Jew hatred! Nothing less! BBC and the people who run it, as well as all who think as BBC does are the enemies of “all” Jews everywhere!

  3. Wrong. Hamas is determined to kill as many Israelis as possible and celebrates when Israelis are murdered. Israel tries to defend itself from Hamas attacks and when Hamas does attack Israel’s response is firstly to defend itself against the rockets (with Iron Dome) and then to damage Hamas infrastructure at a time when it is least likely to cause loss of life. Only when Hamas launches intensive attacks against Israel does Israel respond with deadly force against Hamas and even then tries to avoid civilian casualties.

It really is very false equivalence.

  4. To equate Israel with Hamas is the latest example of the BBC’s anti-Israel bias and is one of its worst. Surely the new UK government should take the BBC to task over such blatant anti-Semitism.
